How Faith, Commitment and Love restored a mind overcome with mental illness.
A Broken Mind Redeemed reveals a wife’s heart-wrenching struggle to keep her marriage together as her husband’s mental illness and alcoholism threatened to tear their relationship apart.
Sandra Dowling Housley chronicles her compelling thirteen-year journey to trust God to save her marriage and to heal her husband. Loving someone struggling with emotional instability triggers feelings of desperation, anger, dysfunction and loss. Sandra holds nothing back about the overwhelming dilemmas she endured: marital battles, a threat of prison, financial ruin, betrayal, serious illness, psychotic behavior, and even death. She shares excerpts from her personal journals and passages from Scripture that guided her during times of crisis.
God’s loving, life-giving responses to her desperate prayers offer hope to others suffering from the confusion and anxiety of dealing with the unpredictable complexities sabotaging an intimate relationship. Both alarming and inspiring, Sandra’s spiritual odyssey will ultimately bring the reader a smile of joy at what a faithful God can do in answer to earnest prayer and a commitment to follow Him.
I moved toward the door and peered inside. There was my husband, nearly naked and bound by a straightjacket, sleeping peacefully atop a bare mattress on the floor of a cold, white room no larger than a walk-in closet. Dried blood formed in the corners of his open mouth. Stunned by what I saw, I struggled to grasp the reality of what had taken place. A scream wanted to escape my throat.
Instead, I turned to look at Meg and softly cried, “I thought he was supposed to be getting better in here.”
My anger at him, once as wide as it was deep, had been washed away by compassion and sorrow. I longed to put my arms around him and console him, as I envisioned the awful terror he suffered trying to free himself from his imaginary foes.
This one of a kind, original painting was the inspiration for my book cover. Artist, Cindy Limbrick, explains the meaning behind each element of the painting. “The rugged texture represents both the valleys and the mountain tops that Mark and Sandy experienced as they moved through their story. The darkness of mental health issues are represented by deep shades of blacks and grays. The transition from the whites into full color represents the healing in this amazing story. Redemption is discovered in the red, deep green, purple and copper. The splattering of the bright gold paint is God’s kiss to Sandy herself for her honesty, her bravery and the diligence she displayed in writing this story.
